What To Consider Before Starting Couples Therapy

If talking about the problems in your marriage on your own is not working, then it might be in your best interest to sign up for couples therapy. It can be a real asset in marriages going through rough patches. Before heading into your first session, there are a few things to take care of first.

The most important thing is that both spouses are open to the idea of marriage counselling. This is not something you want to let your spouse know you are interested in over a phone call or text. Sit down with your partner and talk about why you believe this is a necessary action.

Next, both spouses need to understand that therapy is not an easy process. You do not go into one session, and at the end of it, everything is perfectly fine once again. Couples therapy requires a lot of time and effort, and you both need to be willing to put in the work.

Finally, both of you need to be willing to take a look at yourself and see what areas you need to change. During therapy sessions, you might hear things you want to hear. Your partner likely needs to work on a few things as well, but this treatment simply is not going to work if you are not open to changing yourself in some respect. An easy way to be more open to change is to focus on what you ultimately want to achieve with therapy. Keep your eye on the prize, and you will have more fruitful sessions.

Deciding to go into couples therapy is a big decision, but it is one that can pay off big time in the long run. Your relationship has a lot to gain if you and your spouse decide to go to therapy, so talk it over and schedule your first meeting right away.
