Transformer manufacturers owe a debt of gratitude to William Stanley Junior. He was the creator of the original transformer built back in 1885.
Transformers are devices that are designed to transfer electrical energy from one circuit to another circuit via inductively coupled conductors, also known as transformer coils. Transformer manufacturers build transformers that allow their users to either increase or decrease voltage in an alternating current electrical circuit. Transformers can also be used to convert alternating current power to direct current power.
The devices built by transformer manufacturers are in use all day around the world. When you plug your cell phone, your tablet, or other devices into the wall, you are making use of a transformer. Modern designers can build transformers that are large, such as those used by national utility systems. They can also create transformers that are small, such as those found in electronics. Without the work done by transformer manufacturers, the electronics that people take for granted today could not exist.
Contrary to popular belief, Nikolai Tesla was not responsible for the invention of the transformer. While William Stanley gets a lot of credit for designing the precursor to the modern transformer, credit for inventing the device belongs to people like Ottó Bláthy, Károly Zipernowsky, and Miksa Déri. In addition to Stanley, a number of people helped in perfecting the design.
Stanley made transformers commercially viable in 1886 when he was working for Westinghouse. His model was cheap, easy to produce, and flexible, so it could be used in a number of environments.
