Knowing When to Pay When Moving

There is a huge misconception that some people have when it comes to using long distance movers in Camden County, and that is the idea that you don’t have to pay them until all is said and done. Not true. Long distance movers in Camden County will not unload a single item at your destination until the bill is paid, and the longer they keep your stuff in their truck, the more you may have to pay. A corollary falsehood is the notion that long distance movers in Camden County don’t expect a tip. They usually do.

Jose Gomez learned this the hard way when he moved from California to a house outside of Philadelphia. This was his first long distance move, and like most people, he was under the impression that you pay for a service after it is completed. “No one pays a barber before they get their hair cut,” says Gomez.

There seems to be a healthy medium in the industry, however. Full payment is usually made upon arrival, but long distance movers in Camden County expect to be paid before they unload at the destination. Otherwise, they risk losing money. Jose’s problem was that he thought he would have a few days to settle in and be able to pay in a week or two, and he used up his credit card and bank account on motel rooms and gasoline transporting his family across the country. So when they arrived at their new home and met the movers, his pockets were empty.

“So there we were with all our stuff sitting in a big moving van and no way for us to access any of it. I had to call my 78-year-old pop and get a loan,” Gomez says. “My pops was not happy, but he wired me the money and of course I paid him back.”

Unfortunately, once his things were unloaded, Jose was not able to tip the movers. They let it slide, and of course did not ask for a tip; generally, however, it’s a good idea to budget for a substantial tip for each person in the moving party. Some people say that you should tip each long distance mover as much as $30 to $50, which can add up, so it is something to budget into your moving costs. Springing for pizza after everything is unloaded is often met with gratitude, as well, and can be offset from the tip without offending anyone.
