Renewing your fence with the right Materials

by | Dec 26, 2013 | Materials

A fence is a boundary that the owner of a property erects in order to keep out trespassers as well as define the said boundary. In the United Kingdom boundaries and fencing rules differ according to land deeds and common ownership. For instance if you are putting up fencing in Bath you might need to check the boundary of your property, as to which fence is your responsibility. On land registry and deeds, a sign of the fence is usually a ‘T’, where the tail of the T points to the owners side.

Many years ago, when people simply settled on a piece of land they dug ditches and with the spoil they build a mound and planted some kind of hedge that could define the owner’s edge of the boundary. The ditch itself would represent the very edge of the owner’s property line.

Fencing and the Types you can Choose From

Fencing can be wooden, wire, metal, or other material. It all depends on the purpose of the fence that you are installing or replacing. For instance, if you are farmer you might use chicken wire to fence your chickens into their run, but if have horses you will need wooden ranch style fencing to corral the horses and keep them from running off.

However, if you are a homeowner who just wanted to replace their side fence that separates their home from the one next door, you can do wire, or wood. There is also, solid wooden fencing, lattice style, weaved and picket style. If you get along with your neighbour you might prefer a lower fence that you can have a chat over while you mow the lawn, but if you either don’t know or don’t like your neighbour you might prefer a higher fence to separate the two worlds.

Other kinds of fencing, that are seen in the more rural areas would be dry wall fencing, wrought iron, barbed wire—usually used for keeping animals penned in—electric fencing and vinyl fencing. When you are renewing or replacing your fencing the best thing to follow is the previous material used, unless you are changing the material for a specific purpose, such as swapping out wire for wood.
