College 101: How to Stay Safe in Gainesville Off-Campus Apartments

by | Nov 14, 2022 | Student Housing Center

Living in Gainesville off-campus apartments is fun and exciting. It’s an opportunity for students to gain independence and have fewer restrictions. That being said, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Check out these tips for staying safe while living off campus.

Apartment Safety

Ensure all the doors are locked, including the balcony and patio doors. Be mindful about locking the door when entering the apartment. When hands are full, it can be easy to forget to lock the door. Consider installing a security system. Most landlords don’t mind wireless security systems.

When Walking to Campus

If the off-campus housing is within walking distance to campus, be aware of who’s around at all times. There’s always safety in numbers, so consider walking in a group, especially when it’s dark. When possible, drive to campus or take a shuttle.

Parking Safety

Many students enjoy having a vehicle because it gives them more freedom to get to school and work. When choosing off-campus housing, look for communities with secure parking lots that are gated and well-lit.

Trust the Gut

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore that feeling. Instinct is a wonderful safety tool. Yet so many people ignore these feelings. Students who feel uncomfortable or notice suspicious activity should immediately contact on-site security or local police.

Check-In with Friends

Staying connected with friends and letting people know where one’s going is always a good way to keep safe.
